Deja-Bleu (A Spike/Fred Ficlet)
This is a short that I submitted for July's guest character (Fred) prompt at the nekid_spike community. It's rated PG-13 and set post-Not Fade Away, and at some point I hope to write a little sequel to it. After I finish writing another "In Dreams" chapter. Which hopefully will happen before we all grow long beards and die. ( Read more... ) | | Sunday, June 21st, 2009 | | 7:19 pm |
Oz, On Literature (An Oz Poem)
Oh, dear...this is my first -- and if we're all lucky, only -- foray into rhyme-writing. O__O I made it for a poetry challenge on an Angel message board some months back, and decided to tuck it in here because...eh, because it's Oz and I lurvs him. ;) ( Read more... ) | | Friday, June 12th, 2009 | | 2:58 am |
A SPRED VIDEO! *screams of happiness* The amazingly talented Mscotstar (aka DarlaProduction) has created a Spike/Fred video that's just gorgeous -- and she's also included a little synopsis of her vid's story: "Spike has won back his soul for Buffy, but is sent back to LA instead of Sunnydale. Angel and his team find Spike in a pretty bad state. They keep him locked in the cage of the Hyperion's basement to keep him safe and a close eye on him... With Fred's friendship Spike slowly returns back to his former self with a shiny soul in tow. Will Spike stay with Fred or return back to Buffy?"She's blended dialogue and episode footage seamlessly and artfully and very, very convincingly, so that you really do get the sense that her alternate reality version of AtS Season 4 appeared on our TVs this way, instead of the canon version. Thank you, Mscot! Thank you thank you THANK YOU! You don't know how much this means to me, and you are truly my hero. A Spred Website May Vanish SoonAccording to this message from Yahoo, Geocities will be going out of business sometime this summer: http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/geocities/geocities-05.html"Between Heaven & Hell", one of the few remaining Spike/Fred websites, is hosted on Geocities. While it hasn't been updated in years, it's got some beautiful graphics and sentimental value -- so now's the time to save copies of its pages, before it disappears forever! Between Heaven and Hell http://geocities.com/betweenhh/Two other Spred websites from the AtS S5 era still exist as of this post, although like BH&H, they seem to have been abandoned: Saving Grace http://forsaken-faith.org/sg/index2.htmButtery http://buttery.adamao.org/*hugs them and curses the gods that torpedoed our 'ship* Fortunately Cold Dead Seed, a Spike & James Marsters fan message board, currently has an active Spred shipping discussion thread and a Spred fanfic-fanart forum. You need to register to see many of the threads there, including the shipper ones -- be sure to list "Spike" or "JM" or "Angel", etc., in the Interests box, so that the board administrator will know that you're not a spambot. (Also, don't use a g-mail address there for the same reason -- the admin has trouble keeping spam out when a g-mail account is used.) http://www.fuzzyshark.com/forum/index.php | | Sunday, March 15th, 2009 | | 12:05 pm |
Steampunk Spred Fic Rec!If you're a fan of the Steampunk genre and you like Spike/Fred (and/or Spike/Angel), you'll enjoy this story by my good friend fenderlove: Automated Utopia by fenderlove http://fenderlove.livejournal.com/tag/automated+utopiaRating: R Summary: Set in a Victorian SteamPunk Alternate Universe in which inventions such as Charles Babbage's Difference Engine and the harnessing of steam-power have launched a technological revolution far earlier in history. The time is 1885, and Angel Investigations is working for Scotland Yard. A new case involving a missing artifact from the British Museum and a demonic cult sends the wayward detectives on a whirlwind adventure to reclaim the object before all is lost. Pairings: Spike/Fred, Spike/Angel. Fender's got a gift for flowery Victorian prose typical of novels from this era, and she's done a wonderful job of blending Spike and William into one persona that fits this story's setting so well. Her Fred is spot-on, too, and the fic's humor and visuals are top-notch! Not familiar with Steampunk? "Steampunk is a sub-genre of fantasy and speculative fiction that came into prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s. The term denotes works set in an era or world where steam power is still widely used -— usually the 19th century, and often set in Victorian era England -- but with prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy, such as fictional technological inventions like those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, or real technological developments like the computer occurring at an earlier date. Other examples of steampunk contain alternate history-style presentations of 'the path not taken' of such technology as dirigibles or analog computers; these frequently are presented in an idealized light, or with a presumption of functionality." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steampunk (That wiki webpage, incidentally, has a photo of a wonderful desktop computer that's been customized to resemble a circa 1900s typewriter keyboard, with a monitor that looks like a shaving mirror and a mouse that looks like a telegraph clicker. It's just awesome.) | | Sunday, March 1st, 2009 | | 2:12 am |

Two things that tie together: 1. This morning, between participating in a family-wide relay to the hospital for my little nephew's surprise appendectomy and taking my cat to the vet to get his nuts cut off, I voted. 2. Several years ago, while going through boxes of old family letters, I came across two receipts from 1855 and 1862...bills of sale in which my four-greats-grandfather purchased the following: "two negro boys: Lafayette, aged sixteen years, and Perry, aged fourteen years" and "a negro girl, Judea, aged eleven years, and negro boy eight years named Henry." I remember looking heavenward and thinking, "Granpa, I've always been told that you were a good, kind man. So all I can say is that those damn well better have been little orphaned children who needed a home, and teenagers whose families were within walking distance of your house. Otherwise, you're going to catch ten kinds of hell from me when we meet in the hereafter." I live in the same tiny east Texas town that that grandfather founded, and our voting is being conducted in the town's community center, a small wooden building in a park with a spring-fed creek running through it. It's the same location that Four-Greats-Granpa's cabin stood on. And as I parked there and walked past the creek to the polling center, it struck me that this was where Granpa's slaves had lived and walked, too. So as I picked up my ballot sheet and voted for Barack Obama, I sent another thought skyward: "Lafayette, Perry, Henry, and Judea...this is for you." | | Monday, October 20th, 2008 | | 6:48 pm |

Now I Lay Me (An Angel Ficlet)
Here's an Angel short I wrote yesterday for a fanfic challenge at the IDW Comic Books message forums. I'd intended it to be a drabble but I couldn’t pare it down to one hundred words. It was also the first time I’ve ever written a fic in present tense, and it felt really funky. ;D ( Read more... ) | | Wednesday, August 20th, 2008 | | 10:21 pm |
Winifred Rising (A Fred & Illyria Ficlet)
This was my contribution to another recent fanfic challenge at IDW. Rating: PG Challenge: Write a fic (any length) switching at least once between Fred's and Illyria’s perspectives (in either 1st or 3rd person.) The fic should be set at some point during the time frame of After the Fall (aka AtS Season 6), exploring what it is like for both Illyria and Fred to be sharing a body and struggling against each other. For readers unfamiliar with the comics, the ficlet I've written is a scene from Spike: After the Fall Issue 1, in which Spike discovers a possibly resurrected Fred after L.A. gets sucked into a hell dimension. I've "novelized" the scene, and added what I imagined Fred's thoughts might be. ( Read more... ) | | Sunday, August 17th, 2008 | | 8:03 pm |
